Legislative Branch

The Legislature Branch of SGA creates and votes on legislation. Legislation includes bills, which are action items that SGA has direct control over. Examples of bills include calling for additional club funding, the creation of a committee, or a change to our governing documents. Legislation also can include resolutions, which are statements of intention that SGA does not have direct control over. Examples of resolutions including signing a petition and calling for administrative-level action.

While only elected students can vote, anyone can present legislation at an SGA general body meeting. The templates for bills and resolutions are linked under the “Resources” tab. General body meetings are on Mondays at 7 p.m., and check Instagram (@sgaemory) for the meeting location. General body meetings are open to all students! 

The legislative branch is led by the Speaker of the Legislature, who is chosen from the group of elected students.   

The Legislature of the Student Government Association consists of 16 members, representing the four undergarduate divisional councils.

The undergraduate colleges of Emory University consist of Emory College of Arts and Sciences (ECAS), Roberto C. Goizueta Business School, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, and Oxford College.  

Eight of the seats are evenly divided, with two seats each granted to: College Council (ECAS), BBA Council (Goizueta) , Emory Student Nurses Association (School of Nursing), and the Oxford College Student Government Association. The other eight seats are distributed proportionally according to the student population of each college. It is the responsibility of each divisional council to fill the awarded seats for their college.
